World's first ship type scheme equipped with a carbon capture system has been approved by the classification society

news-details

On March 21, the world's first very large liquefied petroleum gas carrier (VLGC) ship type plan equipped with a carbon capture and storage system (CCUS) developed by Jiangnan Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation, and 711 Institute won the China Classification Society in principle Accreditation (AIP).

This ship type is based on the Panda (Panda) series LPG dual-fuel power VLGC independently developed by Jiangnan Shipbuilding. ) storage tank, which can recover about 12,000 tons of COâ‚‚ emissions per year. (Note: Calculated on the basis of sailing 278 days per year and capturing 1.8 tons of COâ‚‚ per day) Its EEDI value is lower than the baseline by more than 50%, which can meet the requirements of the IMO 2050 target in advance. lay a solid foundation for carbon reduction potential.

The ship type plan is an extension project to further explore the engineering application research of CCUS on gas carrier ships based on the achievements of the tripartite technical cooperation between Jiangnan Shipbuilding, China Classification Society and 711 Research Institute. After nearly a year of cooperation, The project team proposed a calculation method for the EEDI index of ships equipped with CCUS, completed the research and development of the scheme of VLGC equipped with CCUS, and conquered key technologies such as CCUS's own design, actual ship layout, and supporting equipment.

Based on the research results of this project, Jiangnan Shipbuilding will gradually promote the CCUS technology to other main ship types, continuously improve the decarbonization potential of ship types and the competitiveness of the whole life cycle, and contribute to the "carbon peak carbon neutrality" of the shipping industry.
